10 Unique Things to Do in Fujiyoshida and Kawaguchiko (Beyond the Usual Sightseeing)
The Mt. Fuji area is famous for its viewpoints — Chureito Pagoda, Lake Kawaguchiko, Oshino Hakkai. But if you want to do something, not just look, the Fujiyoshida and Kawaguchiko area has more to offer than most itineraries mention. Here are ten hands-on experiences, plus a one-day plan that combines them.
1. Drive an electric go-kart with Mt. Fuji in front of you — Mt.Fuji ecokart
A unique guided tour on public roads in Fujiyoshida, in 100% electric go-karts. The tour takes about 2 hours in total, including a 90-minute guided drive with photo stops where Mt. Fuji fills the view. Because the karts are electric, the ride is quiet — no engine noise between you and the scenery. Tours run 9:00–21:00, and there is an early sunrise departure too. ¥16,000 per driver when you book direct. Drivers need a licence that is valid for driving in Japan, so check yours before booking.
2. Walk through a lava cave
The Fugaku Wind Cave and Narusawa Ice Cave, in the Aokigahara forest area, are natural lava tubes formed by an ancient eruption of Mt. Fuji. The ice cave stays cold all year. It is the "unusual experience" most often paired with a Fuji day trip.
3. Try Fujiyoshida's textile craft
Fujiyoshida has woven textiles for centuries. Workshops in town let you try weaving and take home something you made — a quiet contrast to the outdoor activities.
4. Eat (or make) Yoshida udon
The local udon is famously firm and chewy, served in small shops around Fujiyoshida, some in converted traditional houses. Lunch here is an experience in itself, not just a break.
5. Get on the water at Lake Kawaguchiko
Kayak and SUP rentals run on the lake in season. Seeing Mt. Fuji reflected on the water from a board or boat is a different angle from the shore.
6. Ride the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway
A short ropeway ride above Lake Kawaguchiko to a viewpoint over the lake and the mountain — easy to fit into a half day.
7. Brave Fuji-Q Highland
One of Japan's most extreme roller-coaster parks sits in Fujiyoshida, a short walk from the Mt.Fuji ecokart base. Coasters in the morning, karts after — or the other way round.
8. Stroll Honcho Street
Fujiyoshida's retro shopping street, with Mt. Fuji rising at the end of the road. Old storefronts, small cafés, and the most photographed street view in town.
9. Soak in an onsen with a Fuji view
Several hot springs around Kawaguchiko and Fujiyoshida face the mountain. The classic way to end an active day.
10. Visit Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine
The historic starting point of the old Mt. Fuji pilgrimage trail, in a cedar forest in Fujiyoshida. Quiet, shaded, and rarely crowded.
A one-day plan that fits the best of it
- Morning: Chureito Pagoda early, while the air is clearest
- Late morning: Mt.Fuji ecokart tour (about 2 hours)
- Lunch: Yoshida udon in Fujiyoshida
- Afternoon: Lake Kawaguchiko — ropeway or lakeside — or the lava caves
- Evening: Onsen before heading back, or stay the night in Kawaguchiko
Mt. Fuji is not visible every day, and no tour can guarantee it. Mornings give you the best chance — one more reason to start the day with the pagoda and the karts.
